국내에서 미국 사립고들의 신입생 모집 설명회가 성황을 이루고 있습니다. 최근의 조기유학 열기가 꺾이지 않는 것은 자주 바뀌는 국내 입시제도와 입시정책이 크게  흔들리면서 학부모들의  불신이 커졌고  세계화, 글로벌화시대를 맞아 자녀의 미래를 위해 미국 사립중·고에 진학 시키고자 하는 경향이 늘어나고 있기 때문입니다.

미국의 사립고에  진학하려면 기본적으로 내신 성적(GPA), SSAT 점수, TOEFL성적, 교사 추천서 및 봉사활동 등의 자료를 제출해야 합니다. 대다수 미국의 사립 고등학교는 SSAT 성적을 요구하는데 모든 사립학교에서 원하는 입학시험은 아닙니다.  International 의 경우  시험횟수가 적으므로 최소한 두 달 전에 등록을 해야 합니다. 12월, 1월에 시험을 보면 9월 학기에  응시할 수 있습니다.

SSAT는 Upper Level Test와 Lower Level Test로 나누어지며 Upper Level Test는 8학년에서 11학년까지 치며 주로 미 사립고 9학년이나 10학년으로 진학하기 위하여 보는 시험이며 Lower Level Test는 5학년에서 7학년까지 치며 주로 7학년이나 8학년으로 진학하기 위하여 보는 시험입니다. 시험  방식은 Writing Sample Section을 제외한 수학능력(Quantitative), 언어구사력(Verbal), 독해력(Reading Comprehension)에 관한  객관식 문항이며 웹사이트 www.ssat.org 에서 정보를 얻을 수 있습니다.

The SSAT consists of two parts: a brief essay, and a multiple-choice aptitude test, which consists of five separately-timed sections: two Quantitative, one Verbal, and one Reading. Following are sample questions which might appear on both Upper and Lower Level tests.

Questions:1 (essay response)

Time:25 minutes

Includes one topic statement which you will be asked to support or argue, using specific examples from personal experience, current events, history or literature. This portion is not scored, but is offered to schools to supplement a student’s application. The writing sample offers schools evidence of a student’s skill in written expression while allowing students to demonstrate ability beyond what is evident in the objective portions of the test.

Questions:50 (multiple-choice), in two sections

Time:30 minutes per section

Consists of two sections of 25 questions each. You will be required to do math computation similar to what you do in school or what is useful in everyday life. The Quantitative portion measures understanding of mathematical concepts, computation, routine mathematical manipulations and problem-solving as well as recall of factual knowledge. The questions measure different levels of understanding and vary in difficulty.

Questions:60 (30 Synonym, 30 Analogy)

Time:30 minutes

Consists of 30 synonym and 30 analogy questions. The Verbal section is composed of synonym questions measuring verbal aptitude and analogy questions measuring the ability to identify logical relationships between concepts.

Questions:40 (multiple-choice), based on 6-7 reading passages

Time:40 minutes

Includes 40 questions based on about 7 reading passages. These questions measure your ability to read quickly and comprehend what you read. Reading comprehension passages are narrative or descriptive and are drawn from the fields of humanities, social studies, and science. This section measures the student's ability to assimilate what is read and asks the test taker to recognize central ideas, draw inferences, determine the meaning of vocabulary words in context, and apply information.

Scaled Scores : 성적표에는 어휘(Verbal), 수리(Quantitative), 독해 (Reading Comprehension), 합계(Overall: 어휘+수리) 각 섹션별 점수

SSAT Percentile Ranks  : 전체백분율 환산점수로 과거 3년간 SSAT 를 응시했던 학생들 중에서  같은 학년, 성별 등을 기준으로 본 학생이 어느 정도에 속하는가를 표시한 것이며, 최저 1%에서 99%까지 배점하는데 밑에서부터 계산한 백분율(Rank; 높을수록 좋다) 및 소속 그룹(Range)이 표시된다.

Estimated National Percentile Ranks : 전체 추정 백분율 환산점수로 SSAT를 응시한 학생들 뿐만이 아니라 5학년에서 9학년의 경우 미국 전체 학생들 중에서 이 학생의 성적이 어느 정도인가를 표시하는 것이다. 역시 백분율과 그룹이 표시된다.

Predicted 12th Grade SAT Score : 7학년에서 10학년의 경우 SSAT 점수를 기초로 하여 산정한 12학년에서 응시할 SAT의 추정 점수가 표시된다.
